Older adults have unique dietary needs and they are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition. Dietary factors have often been associated with an increased risk to chronic conditions including blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance, cancer and obesity. While the ageing process itself is a major risk factor of malnutrition in this target group, socioeconomic factors such as access to healthy neighbourhoods and unaffordable prices of nutrient-dense foods are notable ones. Modest dietary changes such as an increase in the number of fruits and vegetables servings and reduction in fat intake could have a substantial effect on reducing the risk of disease burden among older adults. Hence, this special issue aims to gather evidence on the current nutritional status of older persons especially in developing countries, and nutritional guidelines for healthy ageing. Additional material will cover nutrition interventions on healthy ageing and prevention of chronic noncommunicable diseases among older adults.
